Top 10 Beaches in Thailand

2024-12-04

Thailand's beach geography divides along the Malay Peninsula. The Andaman Sea coast β€” Phuket, Krabi, Ko Lipe β€” has its best weather from November through April and is affected by the southwest monsoon from May through October, which produces strong wave action and brings heavy rain. The Gulf of Thailand coast β€” Ko Samui, Ko Phangan, Ko Tao β€” runs on a different monsoon cycle: its best months are roughly December through July, with the northeast monsoon (October through December) bringing the gulf's rough weather. Knowing which coast you are visiting and which month you are there determines a great deal about what the beach will look like.

1. Maya Bay, Ko Phi Phi Leh, Krabi

Maya Bay was closed to tourists in 2018 after severe degradation of its coral reef and beach ecosystem from daily visitor volumes exceeding 5,000 people. The closure ran until 2022, during which the coral showed significant natural recovery. The site reopened under a strict management regime: access by boat only, a visitor cap system, no boats allowed to anchor in the bay itself (all vessels must anchor outside and visitors transfer by inflatable tender), and a daily entry limit. Swimming is now managed in a designated zone. The visual impact of the enclosed bay and its limestone walls remains extraordinary. The Leonardo DiCaprio film that drove the overvisitation is still running as an advertisement for the site to many visitors.

2. Railay Beach, Krabi

Railay is a limestone peninsula south of Krabi town, cut off from the mainland road network by sheer karst cliffs. Access is by longtail boat from Krabi town or Ao Nang, a 15-minute ride. The peninsula has four beach areas: Railay West (calm water, beach bar infrastructure, long-tail boat landing), Railay East (mangrove-backed, tidal, used for boat transfers), Phra Nang (the most beautiful cove, with a limestone cave and Princess Cave shrine, accessed on foot from Railay West), and Hat Tom Sai (secluded, accessible by jungle path). Rock climbing on the limestone towers is a major activity here β€” Railay has some of the best sea-cliff climbing routes in Asia.

3. Long Beach (Hat Khlong Dao), Ko Lanta, Krabi

Ko Lanta is a large island south of Ko Phi Phi with a calm Andaman Sea west coast and a quieter character than Phi Phi or Phuket. Long Beach β€” Hat Khlong Dao β€” is the main beach on the northwest coast, a 3-kilometre stretch with consistent sand and shallow water that shelves gradually. The beach has resort infrastructure without the density of Phuket. Ko Lanta Old Town on the east coast retains a Chao Ley (Sea Nomad) community and Malay-Chinese shophouse architecture. The island is accessible by ferry from Krabi or from Ko Phi Phi.

4. Freedom Beach, Phuket

South of Patong and only accessible by longtail boat from Patong or by an unpaved track (requiring a motorbike or 4x4 and a hike), Freedom Beach has maintained a relatively secluded character despite its proximity to the most developed resort in Thailand. The bay is small, the sand is white, and the water on calm Andaman days is clear. The longtail boat journey from Patong takes under 10 minutes. There is a beach bar with basic food and drink but no hotel infrastructure. The surrounding headland is forested.

5. Sunset Beach, Ko Lipe, Satun

Ko Lipe is a small island in Satun province near the Malaysian border, part of the Tarutao National Marine Park. Sunset Beach faces west and delivers directly on its name during the dry season. The island has three beaches: Pattaya Beach (main longtail landing, busy), Sunrise Beach (east-facing, snorkelling), and Sunset Beach (quieter, better for swimming and sunsets). Ko Lipe has grown rapidly since it became reachable by speedboat from Langkawi in Malaysia. The reef around the island retains reasonable quality; diving is the primary water activity.

6. Nai Harn Beach, Phuket

On the south coast of Phuket, Nai Harn faces southwest and is sheltered by a headland to the west. The beach is calm enough for swimming through most of the dry season, though south swell pushes in during May through October and a red flag system operates. The Nai Harn Lake behind the beach is used for rowing and kayaking. The beach has a mix of free public beach and a private section adjacent to the Nai Harn resort (formerly the Royal Meridien). The Promthep Cape viewpoint at the southern tip of Phuket is a 3-kilometre drive from the beach.

7. Patong Beach, Phuket

Patong is the largest, most developed, and most commercially intense beach in Thailand. Three kilometres of beach with the full spectrum of Phuket tourism infrastructure: jet ski hire (notorious for spurious damage claims β€” agree the price and inspect the equipment before use), watersports operators, bar beach vendors, and the Bangla Road entertainment zone behind. For travellers who want beach proximity to nightlife and restaurants, Patong's infrastructure is efficient. For those seeking quiet, it is not the right choice. The beach itself is maintained and wide, and the northern end near Tri Trang is significantly calmer than the central and southern sections.

8. Khao Lak, Phang Nga

North of Phuket on the Andaman coast, Khao Lak is a 20-kilometre stretch of beach within Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park. The beaches here β€” Nang Thong, Bang Niang, Khuk Khak β€” are backed by jungle and have a resort character without Phuket's density. Khao Lak was badly affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and a memorial site at the Royal Thai Navy boat that was swept 2 kilometres inland is maintained north of town. The dive operations based at Khao Lak access the Similan Islands (also national park, limited season) to the west.

9. Bottle Beach (Hat Khuat), Ko Phangan, Surat Thani

On the north coast of Ko Phangan β€” an island better known for the Full Moon Party on Hat Rin β€” Bottle Beach faces the Gulf of Thailand in an enclosed bay accessible by longtail boat from Chalok Lam village or by a 45-minute jungle trail. The beach has limited guesthouse accommodation directly behind it and a small restaurant. The Gulf side of Ko Phangan has the island's clearest water; the snorkelling on the reef to the east of the bay is the best on the island. Arriving by boat takes 15 minutes from Chalok Lam.

10. Ao Nang, Krabi

Ao Nang is a mainland beach town that functions primarily as a jumping-off point for boat trips to Railay, Ko Phi Phi, the Four Islands, and the Krabi coast's various limestone islets. The beach itself β€” a crescent of sand below the Krabi mountains β€” is pleasant and has good sunsets. The town infrastructure of restaurants, shops, and guesthouses is the most functional and reasonably priced on the Krabi coast. Long-tail boats leave from the beach for Railay West every few minutes during daylight hours.

Seasonal planning

Andaman (Phuket, Krabi, Ko Lipe): November through April. Gulf (Ko Phangan, Ko Lanta is borderline Andaman): roughly December through July. Both coasts in the same trip is possible from December through March. All beaches are on the map.
